NZSIT Second Hand Clothing Market: 97kg of Pre-loved Garments Find New Life Through Youth Action

[AUCKLAND, NZ – May 11, 2026] – Today, the “Second Hand Clothing Market,” successfully concluded at the University of Auckland. The initiative was led by the New Zealand Sustainable Initiatives Trust (NZSIT) in a powerful collaboration with the New Zealand Chinese Students’ Association (NZCSA), the Auckland University of Technology Chinese Students’ Association (AUTCSA), and the Korean Law Students’ Association (KLSA).

16 Stalls: Trading with Love for the Environment

The campus was abuzz as 16 unique second-hand stalls took center stage. Students and community members brought high-quality pre-loved items for trade and exchange, ensuring that garments once destined for the back of a closet—or the bin—were recirculated within the community.

The fusion of sustainability and social interaction was met with overwhelming praise. One stallholder remarked: “The atmosphere today was incredibly loving. It brought like-minded people together for a truly environmentally friendly practice. It’s rewarding to respond to the call for sustainable development through such a fun and direct action.”

97kg of Compassion: Closing the Loop on Textile Waste

While the market buzzed with trades, a dedicated donation channel also yielded impressive results. According to on-site statistics:

  • Total Items Collected: 212 pieces of clothing

  • Total Weight: 97 kg

These donations, carefully sorted by volunteers, will be delivered to the Auckland City Mission and other local charitable organizations. This initiative provides essential material support to vulnerable communities in Auckland while significantly reducing the environmental pressure of textile waste on local landfills.

Innovative “Green Rewards”: Linking Sustainability with Local Business

To encourage students to take their first step into the circular economy, NZSIT introduced a pioneering “Green Rewards” mechanism. The trust partnered with 8 local Auckland businesses to provide exclusive vouchers to every student who participated in the clothing donation.

“By donating my clothes, I’m not just practicing environmentalism; I’m also enjoying practical lifestyle benefits,” noted one participant. This model—exchanging eco-friendly actions for local rewards—breaks the traditional one-way nature of charity, fostering a positive cycle where green living supports the local economy.

17 Volunteers: Empowering Youth to Build a Greener Future

The seamless execution of the event was made possible by 17 dedicated youth volunteers. From initial coordination and stall guidance to the meticulous sorting and packaging of 212 garments, these volunteers demonstrated exceptional leadership and social responsibility.

As a youth-led platform, NZSIT believes that environmentalism should not be a distant narrative but a tangible part of daily life. The Second Hand Clothing Market is a cornerstone of NZSIT’s Campus Circular Economy Series.” Moving forward, the trust will continue to focus on:

  • Campus Circularity: Regularizing second-hand markets and resource exchange events.

  • Youth Leadership: Promoting volunteer-led community action plans.

  • Sustainable Advocacy: Partnering across sectors to promote low-carbon lifestyles.

Through the participation of every donor, stallholder, and volunteer, these garments have been given a second life, and warmth has been shared across the community.

Small Actions, Big Impact. NZSIT remains committed to working with all sectors of society to build a greener, more sustainable future.
